MAT VS REFORMER PILATES

      Two of the most common types of Pilates are Mat and Reformer Pilates. At Niche, we offer reformer pilates and newly added, mat pilates! With this new addition, you may have some questions about the differences, similarities, and benefits when comparing these practices. We hope to provide some additional context around both Reformer and Mat Pilates, so you can find the right form of movement that works best for you. 

     Mat Pilates, as the name suggests, requires only a mat which makes it a more accessible option. With less equipment, comes greater focus on body awareness and control. Mat Pilates is a floor-based workout relying mostly on body weight for resistance. This often involves a series of controlled movements and poses, emphasizing core strength and flexibility. Minimal equipment enhances affordability, making Mat Pilates a more price friendly than Reformer Pilates. 

      At Niche, we offer two styles of both Reformer and Mat Pilates classes.  Flow is a Reformer Class that is rooted in the core principles of Pilates and Niche’s original class format, Flow is designed to focus on strength, flexibility, and balance. This is the best class on our schedule for beginners or new clients. Power Flow is a Reformer class that offers a full-body workout with a focus on faster transitions, ensuring a continuous and challenging flow of movements. Expect to be engaged in creative Reformer exercises that elevate your heart rate, making this Niche's most challenging Pilates class. 

Our founding Mat class formats are in alignment with our Reformer class formats.  Our Move Mat Pilates Class combines the core principles of Pilates and the unique integration of fascial lines. You can expect a fluid class with traditional Pilates and function movement that seamlessly connects, ensuring a harmonious flow that challenges and invigorates every muscle group. Lastly, endurance Mat Pilates class is a high-energy, full-body workout designed to go beyond traditional Pilates, focusing on muscle hypertrophy, cardiovascular endurance, and muscular endurance to leave you feeling strong and invigorated. 

     Reformer and Mat Pilates contribute to improved flexibility, balance, and overall functional fitness. Both movements are typically performed in a flowing sequence, promoting fluidity and coordination. The intentionality behind the movements emphasize the mind-body connection, promoting mindfulness in movement. The reformer's adjustable resistance and added features, such as straps and pulleys, contribute to its versatility. The sliding carriage adds an element of instability, engaging more muscles for stabilization. The added resistance of the reformer helps strengthen and tone muscles. Additionally, a mix of traditional Pilates exercises and reformer-specific movements engages muscles more dynamically. 

   Choosing between Mat and Reformer Pilates depends on personal preferences, fitness goals, and budget considerations. Mat Pilates is a cost-effective and accessible option, while Reformer Pilates, despite higher costs, offers added challenges and versatility. Integrating both into your fitness routine can provide a balanced Pilates experience, catering to different aspects of strength, flexibility, and core stability. Our Reformer memberships are a great way to find a continuing practice of Reformer Pilates if the springs and carriage are calling your name! If you prefer to stick to the mat and like the budget-friendly option of Mat Pilates, we have our Mat and Pilates Gym Memberships available. With that membership option, you can also get some time in our Pilates Gym on the Reformer without an instructor present to try out the Reformer and Mat Pilates! Deciding between Reformer and Mat Pilates may pose a challenge, but the reassuring news is that there's no incorrect choice!
