Can You Really Become a Pilates Instructor Online?
Online Pilates instructor training is becoming increasingly common — but many prospective instructors still wonder what the experience actually looks like day to day.
We spoke with Marjorie Sherman, one of Niche’s current online trainees about balancing coursework with PT school, building a routine, and what surprised her most about learning Pilates in a virtual format.
What made you choose online instructor training?
I decided to pursue Niche’s online instructor training because it offered the flexibility that best fit my schedule. I’m currently home from PT school, and the online format allows me to work toward my Pilates certification while still managing my other commitments. I liked knowing I could continue my training seamlessly even when I’m outside of Richmond.
What does a typical week of training look like for you?
I usually start my mornings with an hour of personal practice, either through an in-person class or one of Niche’s on-demand classes. Beginning the day this way helps me get into the Pilates mindset and reinforces the concepts I’ve been learning before moving on to new material. After that, I’ll spend a few hours working through the online coursework and then give myself the rest of the day away from training. So far, that balance has felt very manageable and has allowed me to absorb the information at a pace that works well for me.
What has surprised you most about the online format?
What surprised me most is how engaging the online format feels. I was initially worried about spending so many hours behind a computer screen, but I’ve found myself actively moving and practicing throughout the lessons. I’m usually on my mat while working through the coursework because physically experiencing the exercises helps me better understand and retain the material.
What has been the most meaningful part of training so far?
The most meaningful part of the training so far has been gaining a deeper understanding of movement and body awareness. As a PT student, it’s been really interesting to see how Pilates encourages mindful movement and control in a way that complements what I’m learning in school. It’s changing the way I think about exercise and movement instruction.
Have there been any challenges, and how have you navigated them?
The biggest challenge has probably been staying disciplined and creating a consistent routine without the structure of an in-person program. I’ve managed that by setting aside dedicated training time each morning and treating it like any other important commitment. Creating that routine has helped me stay consistent.
What advice would you give to someone considering online training?
I would recommend going into the training with a plan and realistic goals for what you want to accomplish each week. The flexibility of online learning is a huge advantage, but staying consistent is key.
What do you hope to do with your certification once completed?
I hope to use my certification to build on the knowledge I’m gaining in PT school and broaden my approach to exercise therapy. I’d also love the opportunity to teach Pilates while working my way through school, both to continue developing my skills and to help others feel more confident in their movement.
