Good Posture Matters to Your Overall Health

According to Barrington Orthopedic Specialists, “good posture is the proper alignment of your body when standing or sitting. Proper posture keeps your bones and joints in optimal alignment and decreases wear and tear on supportive structures.” Additionally, proper posture can also reduce neck and back pain, improve muscle and joint function, and boost your mood.

But, like most things, good posture may take practice and involves making sure your body is aligned and “asymmetrical when sitting, standing and laying down,” (Lompoc Valley Medical Center). By making sure your body is properly aligned, you are not only supporting your spine’s health but also more likely to have better balance, higher energy levels, and reduced levels of stress and anxiety.

There are also several proactive steps you can take to address your posture and ensure that you are supporting your spine’s health. The Joint Chiropractic suggest the following tips to improve posture:

·  Take a look in the mirror. How does your posture look? Can you stand up straight, take a deep breath and roll your shoulders back?

·  Invest in a standing desk. By standing, as opposed to sitting, you will improve your posture as well as circulation.

·  Exercise. This will help strengthen your core muscles and support your spine.

·  Breathe. Deep breathing, which comes from your diaphragm, will help you stand taller and support good posture.

Lastly, if you’re interested in improving your posture and eager to reap the benefits of good spine health, consider a Private Session or a Physical Therapy appointment, like the one offered at Niche Pilates Studio in Richmond, VA, with a certified specialist near you. Good posture is attainable, and the benefits are extensive.
