What Joe did care deeply about, however, was control. In fact, he originally called his method Contrology, defining it as "the complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit." His goal wasn't simply to get people moving—it was to help them move with intention, precision, and awareness.
Long before researchers began studying motor control and neuromuscular training, Joseph Pilates built his method around principles that modern exercise science now helps explain. He believed that movement should be directed by the mind rather than by momentum or habit, writing:
"Ideally, our muscles should obey our will. Reasonably, our will should not be dominated by the reflex actions of our muscles."

Slowing down also increases your muscles' time under tension. Instead of rushing through a movement, your muscles stay engaged throughout both the concentric (muscle shortening) and eccentric (muscle lengthening) phases of an exercise. This develops strength, stability, and muscular control even when the resistance isn't especially heavy.
That's why you might find yourself shaking like a leaf during a standing split series on a yellow spring. The lighter the spring, the less momentum you can rely on and the more your muscles have to do the work.
Your Deep Core Has Time to Join the Party
Those deepest stabilizing muscles—like your transverse abdominis—don't always engage automatically when we're rushing through movement. Slowing down allows you to coordinate your breath with intentional muscle activation, creating stability from the inside out. Instead of letting larger, more superficial muscles take over, you give your body the opportunity to recruit the muscles that provide lasting support for your spine and pelvis.
